Saves The Day - New Slang

I went and shot Saves The Day on Thursday at New Slang (a club night in Kingston), they are a band I saw live quite a few years ago but over the last couple I've really gotten back into them again. As they were performing before a club night they weren't on till pretty late but it was worth the late night. They played a really solid set and I'm glad I went.

Thank you to Zoe & Del for sorting this out for me.

You can see the other Saves The Day photos here.

I also photographed A Day To Remember a couple of weeks ago for Photo Pit and it came at a good time. I've been a bit frustrated with my work recently and have wanted it to be better and it didn't help that I realised I hadn't shot a 'big show' in months. I wanted the chance to shoot in that kind of situation and prove to myself that I could do it. I came out from ADTR pretty happy with my photos. I got to shoot along side Giles Smith which is always an added bonus. I've added a few shots here  but there's more on Photo Pit .

London Rollergirls Season 4 Bout 2 & New Website

14 November 11

This past weekend was the second LRG bout of the season which saw London's All-Star team (London Brawling) take on Sioux Falls who were over from America. It was a really good win for London and I think it highlights how much they are progressing. As usual I had an awesome day and am itching for the next bout already (which isn't till Feb). Shooting this time was harder than usual as the lighting really seemed a lot dimmer than normal which meant shooting at higher ISOs and lower shutter speeds than I would have liked. Sadly this means my shots are a lot grainier and not as sharp as I'd have liked but at the moment with the kit I have, there wasn't a lot I can do about it.

I've been working recently on an events photography/gallery section of my website (similar to the festival galleries I shot over the summer). I decided as I want to do more roller derby photography that I would have a dedicated LRG gallery/site which I have 'launched' it with photos from the first two bouts. It allows for much better interaction with the photos and sharing on social networks. I'm hoping it should turn into something cool, especially as the season progresses.

Since moving to DPG, I really love galleries with large images. It allows you to really appreciate the scale or detail in shots but it can also really highlight the negatives in the work (especially when I look at my own). It's can be really hard to tell sometimes until a photo is up and online.

Anyway, hope people enjoy the shots and the new site (make sure you check out the link below).

My new London Rollergirls gallery can be seen here along with the rest of the shots from the second bout.

Japanese Voyeurs - Camden Barly

11 November 11

Wednesday night seemed to have a lot going on, there were several shows and an exhibition opening I would have liked to have gone to but I could only do one event. I had a pass for a show but that fell through, luckily I got to see Japanese Voyeurs at The Barfly in Camden (sometimes good things come out of plans that don't work out). I'm still very much trying to get back into the swing of shooting shows and this one was a good one to be that.

I struggled a little to get my flash settings right so I swapped to using my 50mm f1.8 lens and it was quite nice using it again. I haven't really had much need for it but it was a pretty good lens that night. At times there was barely any light on stage which made focusing a bit difficult but I'm quite happy with the shots.

Japanese Voyeurs are a great band (which I've mentioned before) and I always enjoy seeing them. The crowd got pretty rowdy during JV which was great but I have to say one of the highlights of the night was one of the support bands, Blacklisters. Despite some problems with their gear they played a pretty solid set. Must make sure I catch them again.

You can see the rest of the photos from the gig here.

I'm shooting another London Rollergirls bout at Earls Court on Saturday which will be fun. I've created a new part of my website dedicated to my LRG photos which I will put up once the ones from this coming bout are all edited and uploaded. I'm quite excited about putting it up as I think it will work quite well for this.

Movember 2011

02 November 11

I am currently trying to raise money for Movember. If you haven't heard of Movember, the idea is to grow a moustache throughout the month of November raising money and awareness about mens health issues. It's a great cause and great fun to take part in.

Officially, you are meant to start the month fresh faced but I'm doing this alongside someone at work and we decided to grow out a beard beforehand and have down to a moustache at the the start of the month. We did this last year as well and although it isn't what you are meant to do it's still in the same spirit and as long as we raise money thats the important thing.

I took a load of self portraits during the various stages of my initial shave down. I am hoping to maybe to do other portraits of other people who are taking part.

The other photos I took can be seen here.
